365 Nature – Day 343

In 2016 I’m doing a 365 Nature project. Learn more about the project and see all the 365 Nature posts.

Looking out the south facing windows of our second floor rooms is one of my favorite views. We can’t see Lake Washington or the Olympic mountains, nor can we see the city. What I can see are the clouds. Most of our weather comes from the southwest and every time I look out the window I see a new view. I can see the sunrise during these winter mornings and the sunsets, all from the same window. At dusk I can watch the thousands of crows fly over our house on their way to the roost. One day I’d love to set up my camera and to a time lapse during one day.

Today I noted the clouds early in the morning and decided to take a photo…

365 Nature – Day 339

With the possibility of snow coming tonight, Seattle has turned it’s collective eye to the sky. This morning I saw reports of snow to the southeast of us and surveyed the sky. I was surprised to see clear, blue skies to the north and to the east and south dark clouds. But most interesting to me were the clouds directly east. I had to get my cloud selector wheel to figure out what they were because they had a bubble texture to the bottom of the clouds. I believe these were mamma clouds, which the selector describes as “cloud lobes clearly hanging downwards.” They were minimal, but quite interesting because I can’t recall seeing them here over the last year, despite my new-found cloud watching interest.

The blue skies…

365 Nature – Day 338

In 2016 I’m doing a 365 Nature project. Learn more about the project and see all the 365 Nature posts.

Over the duration of this 365 Nature Project I’ve repeatedly written about and taken photos of clouds. I even joined the Cloud Appreciation Society early this year. I’ve long appreciated clouds, particularly from a photography perspective where a featureless blue sky makes for very dull photos. Living in the Pacific Northwest offers plenty of excellent cloud opportunities and I’m frequently at our upstairs windows taking photos of the changing clouds. Granted, we have had quite a few flat gray days lately with plenty of nimbostratus clouds. But as a family with an early riser, I know that these clouds don’t persist all day and we often have beautiful mornings just perfect for sunrise. We’re often lucky to have the same at night, with breaks forming just in…

365 Nature – Day 246

In 2016 I’m doing a 365 Nature project. Learn more about the project and see all the 365 Nature posts.

The autumnal feeling continued today and the first thing I saw was a dynamic sunrise with dramatic clouds turned orange. Shortly after breakfast it started raining, really raining. This week has been the first real rain we’ve had in quite a long time. I’ve had to stop myself from going outside to water the garden, it’s become such an ingrained habit since our hot spring. The wind swept the clouds along today and I could see them racing through the sky. Before long the rain clouds had gone and blue sky with the fluffiest of clouds replaced them. It’s been a long time since we experience dark, dramatic skies here in Seattle, Day 191 was the last time we had any good clouds in the sky.

It feels good to…

365 Nature – Day 160

In 2016 I’m doing a 365 Nature project. Each day of the year I will post something here about nature. It may be any format, a photo, video, audio, sketch or entry from my nature journal. It could be a written piece. Each day I will connect to nature in some way and share it here by the end of that day. You can keep up-to-date by subscribing to the RSS feed or be notified by email. See all the 365 Nature posts.

June is also 30 Days Wild and I’m participating again this year.

A return to blissful cool weather and clouds today was most welcomed by me. We just had the second warmest first week of June since the 1890’s and it was in the 80’s and 90’s. Yesterday and today we’ve had some pretty great clouds and it’s been a long time since I shared cloud…

The last couple of days have produced some wonderfully dramatic clouds. As a new member of the Cloud Appreciation Society, I’ve really started to pay more attention to clouds. Although I have traditionally spent a lot of time looking up, that was mostly for birds, not as much at the clouds. Because of this I can’t say if the clouds lately are typical…
