STREET CREATURES QUIZ

What is Street Creatures?  This is the game I run on Twitter every Friday. I’ve
collected all the past quizzes here in one place so you can either relive them, or play
them for the first time.

How does it work?  Provided are four, seemingly unrelated clues, that are all
connected by a wild organism that can be found in a city. Look at the four clues,
do some research, and when you think you’ve figured it out, click on ‘Answer’
to reveal what connects the clues, and how they are connected.

Follow me on Twitter to play #StreetCreatures live every Friday at 9am PST.

Harvestmen/Opiliones

Shepherd:

Harvestmen have many names like daddy longlegs, grandfather greybeard and shepherd spiders. But, of course, they’re not spiders at all, though they are arachnids.

Tagmata:

These are the body segments and spiders have two easily visible tagmata. The harvestmen also has two, but they’re fused and hard to see so it look like they have one.

Penis:

Harvestmen are the only arachnids to possess a penis. And it’s not a simple structure either. @buehlersciwri  writes about these on his blog describing them as looking like “angry, strike-ready cobra.”

But wait! There’s more!! A few years ago a harvestmen was found in amber, “he died fully aroused, his tree-side tryst interrupted by oozing resin that entombed his body in what’s now a lump of amber”.

Learn more.

Solid Food:

Harvestmen are unique among arachnids in yet another way – they eat solid food. Spiders simply suck up the liquefied juices of their prey, but harvestmen cut up pieces to eat.
