365 Nature – Day 66

In 2016 I’m doing a 365 Nature project. Each day of the year I will post something here about nature. It may be any format, a photo, video, audio, sketch or entry from my nature journal. Our Seattle weather has alternated between blue skies and black clouds today and I’ve been under the weather with a cold. While avoiding any real work I was looking at my many open browser tabs which seem to be perpetually open. In one I found a podcast I’d been meaning to listen to and finally did today. It was a Radiolab podcast featuring British nature writer Dave Goulson, who I saw speak here in Seattle a few months back. It’s a very entertaining story about the Death Watch beetle.

Biologist Dave Goulson introduces us to the lonely yearnings of an especially pathetic beetle and snatches a sound back from the hands of the devil himself.

Kelly Brenner

Kelly Brenner is a naturalist, writer and photographer based in Seattle. She founded The Metropolitan Field Guide in 2009 and has contributed articles to aincluding Crosscut, ParentMap and National Wildlife Magazine. She holds a bachelors degree in landscape architecture from the University of Oregon and a certificate in non-fiction writing from the University of Washington.

She is currently writing a book about urban nature to be published by Mountaineers Books in 2019.
